FAQ – Medical - Pregnancy
How soon will a pregnancy test tell me if I am pregnant?
It is possible that a pregnancy test will show positive 2-3 days before the first missed period. The hormone that urine pregnancy tests identify (hCG) can sometimes be detected as early as 6 days after conception. However this hormone generally peaks about 8 weeks after the first missed period.
At what age can I tell the sex of my baby?
The sex of your baby can generally be determined between the 16th and 20th week of your pregnancy. Your health care provider will usually perform an ultrasound to check the health and status of your baby around the 20th week of your pregnancy. The sex of your baby will typically be determined at that time, if you desire that information.
What are the signs of a miscarriage?
The most frequent sign of a miscarriage is bleeding that is typically heavier than your normal menstrual period. You may also experience cramping pain in your pelvic area, low back, or “belly”. Another symptom may be passing tissue, blood clots, or warm fluid from your vagina. If you notice any of these symptoms it is best to seek treatment immediately to avoid further complications.
If I am pregnant and have an STD, can it affect my baby?
It depends on which STD you may have. Some can cause such serious problems as blindness in the newborn while others may have little or no effect. It is best to consult your health care provider for specifics.
