Natural Fertility Awareness A Natural Approach to Family Planning

What is Natural Fertility Awareness?
Natural Fertility Awareness is a natural method by which a couple can plan their family.  By observing their combined signs of fertility, the couple can determine if they are fertile or infertile. During a fertile period they can choose to refrain from or engage in intercourse depending on their family planning goals.  This is all possible without the addition of harmful chemicals or devices that change a woman’s cycle.

The benefits of NFA are numerous:
  • Completely natural and scientifically proven with no side effects
  • Has helped some couples experiencing lowered fertility to become pregnant
  • Can be used during all stages of a woman's life, including breastfeeding and premenopause
  • Easy to learn
  • Inexpensive
  • Strengthens marriage
Natural Fertility Awareness is NOT the Rhythm Method
The Rhythm method proved to be unreliable because it assumed that all women have regular cycles.  Instead, research has shown that each woman has a unique pattern of fertility, which can even change monthly.  Natural Fertility Awareness teaches a couple to recognize these changes and adjust accordingly.

Q:  How effective is it?
A recent study in the Journal of Human Reproduction found Natural Fertility Awareness to be 99.6% effective.  This is similar to hormonal birth control.  The key to such effectiveness is learning the method from trained teachers and using it correctly.

Q: What are Fertility Signs?
A woman can observe her fertility status with three basic signs.
1. Cervical Fluid—There is a changing pattern throughout the cycle.  By observing sensations and appearance, a woman can determine her status of fertility.
2. Basal Body Temperature—A woman’s resting temperature changes throughout the cycle.  There are lower temperatures during the fertile period and higher temperatures after.
3. Cervical Changes—The position and shape of the cervix change as the cycle progresses.  Observation of these changes can also indicate a woman’s fertile status.

Q: Where can I learn Natural Fertility Awareness?
At PSC engaged and married couples can learn the method taught by highly trained teaching couples. All classes and materials are FREE (a $70 value)!  In just five classes, a couple can learn to chart and interpret their fertility signs. The teaching couple will spend individual time with each couple to ensure full understanding of the method and be available to them in the future for additional information.
